Records!

Today brought me the following:

Insect Warfare- "Endless Execution Thru Violent Restitution" 7" on black. I have wanted this for a while. Got it for a steal on eBay. Arguably their best material.
Thought I'd show a pic of the full artwork as I hadn't seen it in its entirety before, and maybe some people out there haven't either. Epic (click on the pic for a better look).

New Outbreak single. Both songs are actually quite cool. Stupid, pointless vinyl colourway though. Typical Think Fast shit.

Graf Orlock- "Destination Time Today" LP on white. Amazing record, every song is a banger. Curious artwork/layout too.

The gatefold folds out with this window thing with a crosshair on it. Inside is a poster divided into eleven faces of different notables from the past. The idea is that you place said notables faces behind the crosshair. Get it? Like they're about to be shot?

Reagan
Lennon
Tupac
Malcolm X
Others included are Abraham Lincoln, Jesse James, Robert Kennedy plus a few more.
Good idea I guess, if a little excessive.

No Tolerance Demo

No Tolerance are a reasonably new straight edge band from Boston playing in the vein of much of the older stuff from the town. SSD, Neg FX etc. Justin from Mind Eraser does the vocals. Painkiller helped get their demo tape out at the beginning of this year I think. Normally I'm not turned on by straight edge bands, so I passed it up at the time. I regret that now, I should have grabbed it. Oh well. The We Are Angry blog uploaded it today. It's a really good listen. Four songs. Something like four minutes.

While you're there check the rest of the blog out. So much great stuff. I've downloaded so much over the last few weeks.

Hard Luck Apocalypse One Sided 7"

The last ep from Hard Luck, leftovers from the recording sessions of the Dead End LP from 2007. Three unreleased tracks and a DYS cover. Rumours circulated for ages about some final material being released before the end of the year, and here it is. Dan Bolton of Faux Hawks has started his new label Ritual Failure to release this one, and I hear of more records soon.

Red wax. Only 200 exist.

Dan's own artwork. Awesome as always.

The Sleeping Eye 2xLP

Finally got my Iron Age pre order yesterday. 12 months of hype has been worth it suppose.

Black wax.

Inside artwork.

Poster that came with the order. It's on my wall now.

Todays stash

Mind Eraser 2003 demo tape. Won on eBay. The tape with the Think I Care and Taste Of Fear covers. Rough sounding recording, though not without it's own charm, the band went on to make remarks on their blog about how they hate this tape due to poor musicianship. I don't see the problem though. Sure, compared to the the 'Cave' LP that followed it, this tape pails in comparison, but I can imagine getting my hands on it when I had never heard anything else by the band before. I would have been speechless I know it. No wonder they went on to do amazing things. These tracks were available as a bonus on the CD version of the Cave album. All bar the two cover songs were re-recorded for said LP.
The 'WFMU radio set / Fucked Up weekend live set' 8 track that I spoke of a few weeks ago. Arrived in the mail with the tape. Like I've said a million times before, I am collector scum.

Still in the wrapper. Number 25 of 50.

Also got a handful of the two latest issues of Distort. #21 and #22. If you're in Brisbane, or if you're one of my friends from overseas, and you want a copy hit me up. If you're not in either of those categories hit up DX.

In The End We Rot

Living Darkness put out their s/t 7" sometime last year or the year before on High Anxiety Records if my memory serves me correct. This 7" was a bit of a mystery to me at one point, but you can read about that here if you so desire. A reader asked if I could upload the ep digitally as the tracks aren't available anywhere online, and as far as we can both see the band have no myspace or any real online presence for that matter. Kind of refreshing really I guess in this day and age huh? Well not for long haha. This is the upload of said 7" from my own collection. Three tracks. 7.5 minutes. The end of the first track skips a little bit. Sorry dudes, my copy is a little rooted.

Here's all I could find out about the band online, a quote from their last.fm profile:
"Toronto multitaskers Living Darkness, which features members of shitloads of past and present local punk, thrash and doom projects (ORN, Black Spokes, Abandoned Hearts Club, Concrete Tank, Saigon Distress Signal, Bayonnettes, CS). LD is the best of irrational teenage frustration mixed with the uncomfortably personal touch of ’90s California hardcore…via Portland…by boxcar…hopping off on the way to pay respects to Motorhead and visit the guy from Amebix that makes swords. Maybe bring him a nice hot sandwich."

They sound like Cursed. Canadian eh? Go.

While I'm at it... anyone else out there who wants to hear stuff from my collection that they can't find anywhere should message or email me, and I'll get onto it. There is alot of stuff that I will get around to uploading eventually.

When a zebra talks people listen

Extortion Terminal Cancer test press. Not sure of how many there are. I'll need to find out I think. Easily the best stuff the band has done. But I have already said that on this blog before.
Rupture rip-off sleeve

And Terminal Cancer with the 45 hole. Of only 10 that exist Rohan tells me. Did I need this one? Not at all... well the collector fag in me did.

Still needed:
-The s/t repress LP on green (of 50) that the band sold most of on tour in California. Mickey sell me yours.
-The limited silver and gold covers of the Rupture split 5" that RSR did.
-Any other test presses... gimme gimme.
- Wouldn't mind a CD version of the demo too.

Rekids

Walls one sided s/t LP. Searched everywhere for this when we were in the states. Had to go with the eBay option when we got home.

Brain Handle- Smiling/Smiling again single. Pretty sure this is a second press. I picked it up cheap as shit.

Bad Seed s/t 7". Moshy stuff. Kinda like Trapped Under Ice, except not as good.

New Magrudergrind LP

Duckhunt Demo Upload

I talked about Duckhunt a while ago, but I have been into this demo for even longer. Here's the upload for the 2004 tape. Get it. Really really good NY styled, modern hardcore.

New Balance store. Letterman. Rupert G and his 'Hello Deli'. NYHC Tattoo shop. Elmo. M&M's super store. Seinfeld Diner. A dude dealing smack to school kids.

Still haven't seen:
Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn banks. A rat and or rats. Vinnie Stigma. Hope to tick those off the list tomorrow.

Holy Ghost LP on grey with black smudge.

First Walls s/t LP on black. I want the new one sided LP more.

Trap Them new LP on clear.

Uptown Girl...

Went uptown today. Trekked up The Empire State Building, Rockafella Plaza, saw all of Times Square, and Central Park. Also made it to the New York Museum Of Natural History and Ed Sullivan Theatre (where David Letterman is filmed). Still need to actually see the show (trying tomorrow) and see The Brooklyn Bridge and banks. Went into Toys 'R' Us at Times Square and picked up old school Ninja Turtles toys. These are official exact recreations of the originals from 25 years ago. All the way down to the weapons and even the packaging. A "25th aniversary edition". I grabbed a few. I couldn't resist.

The Lower East Side

Went to what used to be CBGBs today. It's some uber trendy, mega exspensive fashion store now. Though they've preserved alot of what used to be there. Still, it was kind of dissapointing knowing what it has become.

Also did a load of other touristy stuff, to be talked of at a later point, but it did include the statue, ground zero, and a squirrel. Rad days. Finally managed to hit up some record shopping also. Picked up a few LP's from Generations Record Store in The Village. Also to be talked about at a later point.
Finishing my night with some mega sunburn and a 32oz.

Faith/Void split

Picked up this millionth (?) press today. Been wanting it for a while now. As you know the Void side is amazing. Faith don't do too bad, but compared to Void they're nothing at all. Purple wax.

New stuff

A bunch of stuff arrived today. It probably arrived gradually over the week, but working the amount I do I never get to the post office, so when I did today I was greeted by this stash. Nice way to start my day.

First up is the new Sledgehammer LP, "Wonder If He's For Sale?". PV/metallic hardcore band from Adelaide. The vinyl's clear flexi, and the inserts are this really glossy, thicker paper shit. Mastered by Alan Douches. Quite slick.

I pre-ordered this as soon as I heard about it. I didn't realise I was that quick though. Number 1 of 50. Stoked.

The bands singer Moose also threw in his zine, and the bands first CD. I like Moose.

Next is the second pressing of the Extortion/Rupture split 5". Orange. I've talked about this record before.

I didn't realise this Extortion s/t reissue even existed until last week. I am really off my game. Black wax. I missed the green press, but I'll get it. If you're not in the know it's a reissue of the bands now very rare s/t debut 7" on LP. The original tracks are on one side, and the other side has a new, longer dirgy piece, then some live tracks.

Distort issues #19 and #20.  Issue 19 has Lebenden Toten, Napalm Hearts and Homosexual Tourists (Snake Run). Issue 20 is the new 7" from this band Flyin' Trichecos. I know nothing of them yet, but apparently they're some new scuzz fuck band from Cleveland, so go figure concerning the Distort connection. Black wax of 300.

Wu-Tang 36 Chambers LP

I'm by no means any kind of rap connoisseur, though there are a few groups and artists that I really dig, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Jake One, and Wu-Tang Clan being a few examples. This here record is pretty much the only rap LP that I have ever been interested in getting my hands on. It's a repress, no OG here, but like I said, I'm no connoisseur so this is good enough. The album that broke them. And the album with the most classics all in one spot. Black wax.

The only Wu-Tang release that I want more on vinyl than this one is the "RZA Hits" compilation, but I don't even know if that was ever released on wax. I'll have to look into it, nearly every song on that disc is a banger.

Extortion Demo Upload

I have a mate who's chasing the MP3's from the Extortion demo tape, and since Rohan's own upload expired a while back I thought I'd upload it myself.

It sounds like shit, and the band have progressed quite a bit since this recording, but I suppose if you're an Extortion freak, you'll be excited about this one. Maybe not though? Either way, if you're at least interested in where this band first came from have a listen. I should also say that these actual tracks are the ones that I downloaded from Rohan when he first uploaded them. If you read his post you'll learn about the Black Flag cover, which isn't included here. Though I do have one of the 20 tapes with said cover track... maybe one day I'll get around to dubbing and uploading it.

Our Times Interview

Here's an old interview I did with Our Times in issue 5 of TheSharpEndZine. It's an older interview, hence some of the nooby questions. I have lost track of this band in recent times, but the ep they were riding at the time of this interview was (and still is) amazing. I think that I heard that they're breaking up. Damn shame. Good thrashy hardcore from Buffalo New York. RIP.

First up members, roles etc?

Jason-vocals, Ian-bass, Dave-Guitar, Joe-Guitar, Kelly-Drums.

How long have you guys been together?

3 years now I believe.

Where and when did you form?

Well Ian and I got together in October of 2003 and wrote a bunch of songs. None of them got recorded because they weren't that good except for zombies which is on the 7". Actually that was the first song that we wrote.

Your debut s/t 7” has been out for a little while now. How has it been doing since it’s release last year?

It's doing really well. It's doing much better than we expected it to. It's on it's 2nd press and final press. The second press is limited to

310 copies all on black because the pressing plant broke the plates and they won't pay for new one's so that is it unless we wanna pay for a whole new set off plates which is alot of money.

I almost stumbled upon the record by accident, I’m so glad I found it. Are most people out there of the same opinion? In general how have the kids been reacting to it?

The reaction has been awesome. We've heard nothing but good things about the record.

The EP was released on Headcount Records. How did the deal with the label come about? Did they help alot financially or did you guys have to contribute a fair amount of cash?

We already had the demo cd out for awhile and Headcount got a hold of us and said they wanted to press it to vinyl. Headcount paid for

everything. Pressing fee's and artwork. Booby Headcount is an awesome guy. He's got a good label going and we are glad we got to be a part of that.

Some bands keep it vinyl only but you guys have also chosen to release the material on CD. Why this decision? Why not take the record junkie road and only do wax?

Well the cd was out before the wax. Nick ThirdxParty of ThirdxParty records gave us $100 towards recording because he wanted to help us get our new music out at the time. Then Headcount Records wanted to press it to vinyl.

What has been more popular? The record or the CD?

Well you got the record collector's and you got the kids who don't have record players. So I'd say it's about even.

The record comes across to me as an extremely energetic, fast paced, melodic record. When writing the stuff what sound were you guys most hoping to get out there? Have you been happy with the end result?

Yeah we were all pretty stoked on the end result of the recording.

Production is spot on too. Some bands suffer the shitty sound syndrome but it seems that Our Times have escaped such a fate. Do you guys have any personal gripes with the sound?

Ian isn't to keen on the bass sound on the record but other than that everyone is real happy with it.

So an plans for future releases? You guys must have some new stuff written now?

There will defiantly be an OT release in the future. We have about 4 new songs written right and are planning on writing at least 6 more before we go and record again.

How does the new stuff sound? Still fast and energetic?

I'm real happy with the new songs. You can pretty much expect the same. Fast, energetic, in your face hardcore.

Will the new stuff still be out on Headcount?

Not sure. We will probably shop it around. But I would love to work with Headcount again.

Lyrically the material is virtually devoid of really cryptic stuff and otherwise is very straight forward. Are you in charge of all lyrics?

Yeah I write 99.8% of the lyrics but anyone in the band is welcome to contribute. Ian helps out in the lyric department a little. But for the

most part I write the lyrics.

The opening track ”Stab At Reality” strikes me as the best, musically and lyrically. ”When will you wake up and realise your

parents won’t always be there for you?”. What’s the story behind the lyrics in this song? How did they come about?

Well when my fiancee was going to college she had this one roommate who had everything handed too her and would complain if she didn't get what she wanted when she wanted it. I'm sure we all know someone like this. But dealing with that for a whole year day in and day out just got really frustrating when you work really hard for everything. Whether it be for money working a 9 to 5 job or studying your ass off to get good grades and she doesn't do shit and gets everything handed to her like it's no big deal. But the sad part is, is that people like that just don't fucking get it and will live like that the rest of their lives but that's just how it goes. Sorry don't mean to ramble she just pissed me off alot.

Our Times is a straight edge band. What other straight edge influences do you guys look up to? What made you get into straight edge in the beginning?

Now it's time for your typical cliché answer but it's true. I never did drugs, drank alcohol, or smoked cigarettes. I never knew there was a word or so called label for it until I heard Minor Threat. We all listen to alot of old school hardcore bands like Youth Of Today, Judge, Chain Of Strength, Side By Side, Minor Threat.

What do you see as the biggest problems amongst the straight edge scene these days?

People who take it to far.

And with that what are some of the positives?

Just living your life the way you want to live it. Whether your straight edge or not it doesn't matter to me. As long as you respect my decision I'll respect yours. Check out our song “X's Aren’t Everything” for a better explanation.

So in Australia you guys obviously have some sort of a following. You’re featuring in this here zine and you’re also to be featured in another good Aussie zine Cross The Line. Does having the following over here surprise you? How does it feel knowing people dig your shit down here?

It is very surprising but it is awesome knowing that kids on the other side of the world are digging our shit.

Ever any chance of seeing you guys down here?

Not anytime in the near future but we would love to do it.

Where can potential fans get in contact with you guys to find out more / download music etc?

You can check out our myspace which is www.myspace.com/ourtimes or go to www.headcountrecords.com to pick up merch. You can also get the 7" and cd through Revelation and Interpunk.com.

Thanks for the time. Any thanks, shout outs etc?

Yeah thanks Nick Thirdxparty for all his help, Bobby Headcount and Headcount Records. Shout out to NoxGoal another amazing Buffalo

hardcore band you should all check out!!
